For Caregivers Providing at Home Support for a Loved One:
  • To avoid fall risks, provide a safe environment for the patient. Modify access points and the bathroom to enhance safety.
  • Learn effective methods of “transfers” i.e., move from bed to chair, etc. Secure equipment you need.
  • Make technology your friend to enhance your care skills.
  • Maintain a normal routine.
  • Schedule medical visits for the time of day best for the patient.
  • Post current medications and all appropriate medical numbers on the refrigerator. Update information as needed.
  • Manage television viewing to minimize negative/violent movies and shows. Play familiar music.
  • Administer medications - grind meds if needed.
  • Pay attention to the patient's hydration while serving nutritional meals and snacks.
  • Allow your loved one to help with chores, if capable.

Self-Care Tips from Experienced Caregivers - "Put the oxygen mask on yourself, first!"
  • Join a support group; learn as much as you can about this disease then build your support system and ask for help when needed.
  • Schedule time for yourself and your needs; take breaks/naps to refresh yourself.
  • Maintain a healthy diet, get adequate rest, limit caffeine, smoking and alcohol consumption.
  • Pay attention to your stressors to manage stress effectively - hit your “pause button”- act, don’t react as this to will pass.
  • Care for your own physical and emotional needs - doctors, tests, hobbies etc.
  • Maintain your home environment - replace or repair items as needed.
  • Manage family members’ negative attitudes that affect you.
  • Know your finances and update any legal papers as needed.
  • Look at what you can change and accept what you can’t.
  • Enjoy your loved ones accomplishments - laugh when possible - live in the day and practice gratitude.
  • Lower your expectations as things change.
  • Pick your “battles” - How important is the ‘win?” But, set boundaries.
  • Investigate benefits of meditation, yoga, exercise and breath work.
  • Listen and communicate with no judgement.
